The Agony of a Humpty Dumpty Fall

As long as we keep our eyes on Jesus, the difficulties that we face in life are much easier to bear, because of the peace that God provides in the midst of the storm.

(Philippians 4:6-7), “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;” vs.7 “and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

There are people, though privy to the cautions in the Bible, insist on straddling the fence or wall that separates right from wrong.  They usually find themselves leaning from their seated position toward the wayward side of the wall, because sin is enticing.  It is easy to lose one’s balance and fall when looking at the wrong things.

The problem with this scenario is the looking down, which causes dizziness from vertigo.  Christians are to keep their eyes lifted high, with chin up, lest they become weary in well doing.

When a person is established in Christ on the side of righteousness, and they abide in the truths of God’s Word, they are like a tree that’s planted by the still water, yet some wanderers scale the “wall of neutrality” to see what’s on the other side, because of curiosity.  There is a saying, “Curiosity killed the cat.”  God would rather a person be hot or cold; not lukewarm.

(Revelation 3:15-16), “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot.  I could wish you were cold or hot.”  vs.16 “So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.”

It is a deliberate act of duplicity on anyone’s part if they find themselves broken and battered from falling on the side of wrong doing.  This action reminds me of the Mother Goose, nursery rhyme I read as a child.  “Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.  Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.  All the kings horses and all the kings men couldn’t put Humpty back together again.”

How many people do you know that started out strong for the Lord, but somewhere along the line they allowed their eyes to stray from God, which caused them to yearn for the wrong things that tempted them to sin.  If they hadn’t been sitting atop the wall gazing at things they shouldn’t have, as though it were a vantage point of some kind, their eyes would have remained steadfast on the Lord.

One day you looked around and they were no-where to be found on the side of righteousness.  The next thing you heard they were running with the wrong crowd, or strung out on drugs and alcohol, or in prison, or divorced.  They had a great fall as a result of disobedience, because they sat on the wall of neutrality, tempting fate.

Now faced with brokenness from their fall, they find that nothing and no-one can put the pieces of their life back together except Jesus.  The Lord is compassionate and forgiving.  Unlike Humpty Dumpty that had a great fall, with no hope of being put back together again, all is not a total loss when Christians fall into temptation.  The Lord mends the pieces of their broken heart and shattered dreams, because He loves them dearly.  Jesus is every Christian and sinner’s hope—God forgives.

(1 John 1:9), “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

We have a mediator, Jesus Christ the Righteous, who makes intersession to God the Father on behalf of fallen man.  God listens to His son’s plea for mercy, and extends grace to those that are broken at the moment they cry Abba Father.

The Aramaic word ‘Abba’, “Father” is significant in the spiritual life of Believers.  Some Christians believe the word ‘Abba’ means ‘Daddy’.  It’s okay, because God is our daddy.

(Romans 8:13-15), “For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”  vs.14 “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”  vs.15 “For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”

God’s grace is sufficient to mend the brokenness of fallen people.  No person need lie at the bottom of the wall and suffer like Humpty Dumpty.  We are all sinners saved by grace out of a broken, crushed lifestyle, through mercy.

(Romans ), “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

That which God did for me in my broken state of disrepair, He will do for you, because He is no respecter of person.  God is waiting patiently for your request for help.  He does not force Himself on anyone, though he is beckoning you to come and allow Him to bind up your broken, battered wounds.

Allow Jesus to pour into your life the healing balm of His love.  Receive His arms of comfort around you.  He wants to carry your cares; so cast them all on Him, because He cares for you.  He is here to be your strength as you lean upon His everlasting arms.
