Please, I Want More...

My wife makes some of the best spaghetti in town.  There is always room for more—it’s just that good.  Pasta made with love satisfies my hunger so completely that I usually skip dessert when she serves me a second helping.

Some people want a little more money.  Others want more recognition at work.  When there are those who desire more fame and fortune in Hollywood.  As for me, I want more of Jesus.

I want to walk as He walked, hearing the voice of God speaking gently to my heart.  There is a chorus our church once loved to sing, “More of You.”  The words express a longing that reaches far beyond the temporary things of this world: “More of You; more of You.  I’ve had it all, but what I need is more of You.  Of things I’ve had my fill, but yet I hunger still.  Empty and bare; Lord, hear my prayer, for more of You.”

When we compare the Lord to the riches of this world, positions of authority or the luxurious lifestyles of those who live in penthouses atop towering skyscrapers, none of these things—with all their glitter and fanfare—can provide lasting joy or true satisfaction like Jesus does for those who desire more of Him.

Scripture expresses this thought well in Mark 8:36: “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

That verse certainly gives a person pause, doesn’t it?

This life is temporary.  Nothing in this world lasts forever—not like eternity.  The things we have accumulated will one day be left behind when we die.  We cannot hook a U-Haul trailer to our soul and take our possessions into the afterlife.

As we came into this world, so shall we leave it.  What, then, should be our greatest priority?

We should focus on living a Christian life and laying up treasures in heaven rather than on earth.  Jesus reminds us of this in Matthes 6:19-21:

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

The question, then, is not simply, How much more can I have?  Perhaps the better question is, How much more of Jesus do I want?
