Windows to the Soul

There seems to be a great deal of debate over the origin of the phrase, “Eyes are the windows to your soul.”  Having noted this, I will incorporate the concept into my thought for today.

People that are filled with the Spirit of God radiate His love and affection.  Their eyes are alive with kindness, because the eyes are windows to the soul, which reveal the freedom they possess; no longer bound by the old sin nature.

God forgave my sins the moment I invited Jesus into my heart in 1969.  Not only was I renewed on the inside, but my countenance was also changed.  The expression on my face was one of peace, with a smile, whereas, I had nothing to smile about prior to my conversion.  My eyes were alive with gladness, because I experienced a born again awakening.  No longer was the grip of sin squeezing life out of me; I now had the joy of the Lord, which generated new life experiences.

The next day my friends saw the change immediately.  They asked me what was wrong.  No longer was I harboring hate and despair, but glowed with gratitude and love for what God had done.  They saw Jesus in my eyes.  I was different, because God made the difference.  He gave me hope where there was none.  I was a new person!  I was a Christian!

My friends could see deeply into my soul as I shared Christ with them.  My eyes were windows that revealed clear insight and understanding of God’s amazing grace.  They knew me before, but now there was something extraordinary that drew them to me.  It was the Lord inside my soul.  They wanted what I had.

One by one I witnessed to my friends regarding God’s amazing love that He expressed through His Son Jesus.  I can remember after one friend invited Jesus into his heart, he exclaimed, “I can look you straight in the eyes, because I have what you have!”

I rejoiced with him as tears coursed down his cheeks.  I saw in his eyes what he saw in mine.  Like windows to the soul, they told the story.  A miraculous change took place when God forgave his sins.  The peace that surrounded him was the same peace our Heavenly Father gives to everyone that desires a new beginning.

The next time you look into the mirror, look deeply into your eyes and take note of what you see.  Is it unrest, calamity and worry, or is the beauty of your soul looking back at you?  Jesus makes the difference.

The Unsung Hero

It seems the older I get the less our nation’s citizens value truth, justice, and the American way.  The disregard for honor and integrity resonates with increasing intensity from the highest position in this land of opportunity to the lowest menial laborer; bad examples of a dastardly life style.

As people take their eyes off the important things that made this nation great, with ever decreasing veracity and respect for the values that this country was founded upon, the echo of “God Bless America” is becoming seriously muffled.  “In God We Trust” is slowly being eroded by humanistic teachings and godless rhetoric.

Some of our politicians would rather sell us out to the highest bidder than to stand for the rights and freedoms that here-to-fore heroes bravely fought and died for.  It is shameful and nothing less than treasonous, in my opinion.

Every American needs to consider how fortunate they are to live in a land where a democratic government provides inalienable rights and freedoms.  At the rate we are going, I believe that it’s only a matter of time that our civil and constitutional rights will be ripped from every man, woman, and child.

Anarchy will come from within our own ranks of government as a result of deteriorating Christian values and anti-American activities by individuals that are allowed free reign to influence our children and ‘sleeping’ adults with half-truth propaganda.  It will happen if principled; God fearing Christians don’t wake up and make right choices at the voting polls.  Wrong decisions that govern states and nations come from Godless people that are voted into office.

If focus ceases to spotlight the values our nation was founded upon, we are doomed for ruination.  Our forefathers considered God to be the cornerstone for success and prosperity.  Such has been the case for decades, but this nation is quickly leaving God out of the equation.  I shudder to think what’s around the corner if people continue down the path that suppresses truth; ignoring God’s laws.

Were it not for the men and women of our armed forces that were willing to lay down their lives for the freedoms we now enjoy, there would be none.  Our country should be ashamed of how they ridiculed our troops when they came home from the Vietnam War.  These brave souls were greeted with jeering crowds that despised and reviled their arrival.  Some Americans scorned our heroes and failed to recognize that they were doing their job; following the will of our government’s leaders.

These gallant men and women were shipped off to a foreign land not only separated from family and friends, but to risk life and limb that others might also experience freedom from tyranny and oppression that was repressing them.  I call these and all veterans, heroes, yet many people in our nation fail to recognize the patriotism and integrity of honorable warriors that died for the cause of freedom.  It’s shameful when people in the United States, who believe in God and freedom, put up with such un-American activity.  When are we going to stand and say, “Enough is enough!”

I was taken-a-back when I heard a news reporter on television call three people, heroes.  I listened closely as he shared commentary concerning a rescue team’s effort to free six trapped coal miners in Utah that were entombed by a cave-in.   Several lost their lives that day.

Three brave souls recognized the dangers ahead of them, yet proceeded anyway.  Sadly, their heroism ended in death.  Did they want to die?  No!  Was their ultimate goal to free six miners that were trapped?  Yes!  Though their endeavor was in vain; it wasn’t because they didn’t try.

It was most appropriate and fitting for the news reporter to call them heroes.  There is still those Americans that have not closed their eyes to honorable men and women that come to the forefront when the need is presented.  Three individuals gave their lives in the hope that others might be saved, even in the face of danger, just as our heroes in uniform gave their all for you and me in foreign lands.  All gave something; some gave their all.

There is a person that is not recognized in the world for his contributions to mankind.  He is snubbed, insulted and despised.  He gave his life that others might have life, but is not considered a hero by multitudes of people.

Even the Nation of Israel is still looking for their hero to reveal himself.  Most Jewish people refuse to recognize this person as being their promised Messiah.  They are patiently awaiting his appearing, but he already came over Two Thousand years ago; born in a stable in Bethlehem, Israel to a man and woman that loved God.  They named him Jesus.

It’s up to you and me to accept God’s gift of His Son Jesus, or we, like the Nation of Israel and multitudes of non-believers, can reject Him as Lord and view His death as nothing more than a mere, mortal man’s attempt to make a name for himself.

Every living soul that recognizes the Lord Jesus Christ as their true hero and Savior will be saved from the captivity that sin causes.  Jesus died to set us free and arose from the dead on the third day to give us life.  I and countless numbers like me have been set free.  The Lord’s death was not in vain.  Won’t you claim eternal life and allow Jesus be your hero?

(Acts )  “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Jesus would have preferred not to die on a cross if there had been another way for mankind to be saved, yet He followed the will of the Father in heaven, and gave His life freely.  He is truly our hero and should be recognized as Lord.  Through Him we can enjoy true freedom from the tomb of sin that holds us captive.

A No Nonsense Kind of Guy

There are people that treat you one way to your face, yet talk trash behind your back, out of your presence.  When these negative comments find their way back, and they usually do, they cut deeply like a sharp knife depending upon the remarks and who made them.

The Bible instructs us in (Romans 12:9) to love without dissimulation.  “Let love be without hypocrisy.  Abhor what is evil.  Cling to what is good.”  Back stabbing with cruel remarks bring resentment and distain to the one being talked about.  It can cause hurt feelings and impair relationships.

My mother was never one to speak harsh words about anyone.  I cannot remember her ever badmouthing another person.  Mom had a heart of gold that was filled with compassion.  Tenderness was manifested to everyone she met.  In her presence you felt the warmth of God’s love radiating like a Buck stove on a cold winder’s night.

Mom’s close relationship with the Lord was the endearing factor that drew others to her.  Everyone loved Mom Boyd.  Kindheartedness looked beyond another person’s shortcomings, while her soft spoken nature made you feel secure and loved; a kindness that was unmistakably God.

Dad, on the other hand, was Dad.  If he didn’t agree with what you were doing or something you said, he didn’t hesitate, or hold back in telling you just what he thought and felt.  He preferred to speak his mind to your face rather than behind your back.  He wasn’t part of the church’s rumor mill bunch, and he didn’t involve himself with scuttlebutt, nor subscribe to malicious gossip.

At times he would draft a letter of correction, or a note of constructive criticism, and mail it to the person he disagreed with.  I remember many conversations he had with Mom in the privacy of our home, discussing people that he butted heads with, because of differing viewpoints.  He was set in his ways and no-one could sway him to think otherwise if he believed that he was right.

Dad seldom expressed verbal compliments to anyone, but rather showed his love through the deeds he did on occasion for people.  It wasn’t in his makeup to say, “I love you,” or “You did a good job.”  It was always, “You can do better!” whereas, Mom was gracious, loving and kind.  I thank God for Mom that expressed her love to me in both word and deed.

Mom was not the disciplinarian in our family; Dad was.  He believed strongly that a child should obey their parents.  He raised me and my three siblings to respect authority.  He challenged us to be the best at whatever we set our minds to do.  He formed good work ethics in all of us, notwithstanding, sensitivity to the awesomeness of God.  But we never heard the words, “I love you.”

I sometimes think about Dad; remembering the negative parts of growing up, and sadly focusing on the “what-ifs” of the less tender side of Dad, rather than allowing my mind to center upon the greater heritage that he left me.  Were it not for his teachings concerning the importance of serving God and making heaven my home, I might be lost in a cesspool of sin and degradation.

I knew he loved me, but I didn’t realize how much I loved him until after he was gone.  Time and separation have a way of revealing such things.

Though I felt Dad was hard at times and believed that he could have used different tactics when handling certain situations, never the less, he sowed the seed of God’s love in my heart.  When I was older, searching for peace, strength and direction, Dad’s training surfaced.  I knew how to find happiness; Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God.

I cannot tell you the content of the many prayers that Dad prayed as I was growing up; only that he prayed.  I witnessed, first hand, answers to Dad’s prayers, because he trusted God’s sovereignty.  Through his example I learned to trust God whenever I pray.

Though Dad was deficient in outward expressions of tenderness, he taught me about God and His love.  Mom’s tender arms made up for the lack of Dad’s touch.  His firm belief in God is the weld that bonds me to his memory.

Dad was a no-nonsense kind of guy.  At times it was hard to accept his attitude and opinions, but he raised me with integrity, honesty and a love for God.  What more could I ask for?  He showed me, the Way, the Truth and the Life—Jesus.  For this I am blessed beyond words.

If you are battling a memory that raises its ugly head from time to time, remember, God wants to be your Heavenly Father and love you with a never ending love.  Jesus desires to stroke your brow, and hold you close, while saying, “I love you.”

The Bible gives directions on how to have a personal relationship with the Lord.  The scriptures are God’s love letters to us; in them we find what our heart is longing for.  They teach us how to become a no-nonsense kind of guy, having tenderness and love, with a soft, gentle spirit.

In God We Trust

If I were arrested for my belief in the Lord Jesus Christ, would there be enough evidence to convict me?  I heard this question asked years ago and thought it profound and noteworthy.  Christians, with wholesome values, are becoming more unpopular in our society and throughout the world.  They are looked down upon and scorned.  This concerns me greatly.

Seeing the negative changes that are taking place in our nation gives me cause to consider the writings of St. Matthew’s gospel in the New Testament.  (Matthew 24:9), Then shall they deliver you up to tribulation and shall kill you, and you shall be hated of all nations for My name’s sake.”

Our country has produced and circulated dollar coins for the year 2007 without the words IN GOD WE TRUST stamped on the face.  They are on the edge of the coins; out of sight; out of mind.  I believe future actions will be to remove these words altogether.  If you would have told me a few years back that they would have stooped to the level of thoughtless disregard for the sanctity of this nation, I would have thought you to be out of touch with reality, but here we are.

Christians are victimized, looked down upon, and ridiculed for their belief in the Lord Jesus Christ throughout America and the rest of the world.  Other so-called religions are given more credence and protection by our laws than those for which this nation was founded.

In God We Trust is being substituted with idolatry like never before in the history of the United States of America.  The Christian belief is no longer considered valid or prudent by many of our leaders.  This same mindset is filtering down to the general populace.

Woe unto this great nation if God is replaced with ungodly principles and humanistic teachings.  Calamity and the judgment of God will no doubt follow.  This trend is happening so quickly that people scarcely see the forest for the trees.  It is right in front of them, yet they cannot see, because Satan is blinding the intellect of mankind.  Christian influence is facing challenging obstacles ahead, but God is greater than any manmade religiosity and cultism.

Today’s lack of concern to elect God fearing men and women, having Godly principles, into leadership positions creates misdirected control by those in charge.  Americans are led to believe that their rights are being protected, when in fact, they are not.  Some of these leaders and influential wannabes speak encouraging words out one side of their mouth, spouting that they have our best interest at heart, while systematically working behind the scenes to obtain their own agendas.  They are hypocritical, bigoted, and self exalted phonies.

All they want, in my opinion, is more power and less control by the citizens of the United States; righteous or otherwise.  They want to make all the decisions pertaining to American lifestyle to the point of condemning Christian values and the wholesome convictions that they hold dear.

Christians are like mirrors that reveal the depth of corruption in the hearts of sinful leaders.  Christians reflect the righteousness of Jesus Christ, which exposes unrighteousness and ungodly behavior for what they are.  Corrupt men and women prefer that Christians be silenced once and for all.

The godless nature of people having false religions from other countries now living in this land of opportunity, and numerous United States born citizens of this free nation, desire the same; that Christians be silenced.  They prefer darkness rather than the light of God’s Word, because their heart is evil.  I said, “Free nation,” but for how long?

I believe this motherland is entering the beginning of sorrows mentioned in (Matthew 24:3-8).  A time may be soon coming when church doors could be boarded up and freedom of worship taken away.  It’s just around the corner if our nation continues down the path it’s on.  The failure to fall on knees of repentance before the true and living God will bring to pass the scripture in (Matthew 24:9).

I sometimes question whether or not  there is enough of Christ in me to take a stand for what I believe, or will I bow to ungodliness and seek to save my life?  These are sobering questions, but God said that He would go with His children even to the ends of the earth.  He will never leave or forsake them.  The Holy Spirit will provide whatever is needed to stand for the Lord in that day.

God is our strength and high tower.  We can do nothing within our own strength, but through Him we are made strong.  His strength becomes our strength through the Holy Spirit working within us.  Every born-again Believer can stand against tyranny, ungodly leaders, and the neighbor next door, should days of tribulations become a reality in our lifetime.  We stand in the almighty name of Jesus.  We needn’t fear things to come, because perfect love casts out all fear.  God is perfect love.

The disciples of Jesus Christ were able to face horrific maltreatment and abuse as did a host of other dedicated followers of Christ down through the ages.  God gave each individual the strength to endure ghastly persecution.  They remained unmovable in their faith; proclaiming Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.  They were able to stand in this faith and suffer many things for the cause of Christ, even death, because the Holy Spirit dwelled within them.

The same Spirit that dwelled in these patriarchs dwells in Christians today.  It is through the unchanging power of God, which is in every Believer, that liberty and true independence reigns supreme.  In God we trust!

Think On These Things

In (Philippians 4:8-9) of the New Testament we read, “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there be any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”   vs. 9 “The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.”

The latter part of verse 9 tells us that the God of peace will be with us.  As a person thinks on things of desirable quality and worth, this discipline produces a good thought process.  Peace and positive results follow.

We have all experienced difficult circumstances that caused feelings of helplessness and a heightened level of anxiety and insecurity; bringing feelings of frustration.  This is the nature of humanity, but we can guard against and rise above such feelings.  No-one need submit, or surrender themselves to them.

Bear in mind, when feelings are allowed to captivate one’s thinking, they are known to generate paranoia that fail to represent what is factual; often falling short of truth.  They are only feelings of what might be.  Facts are not based upon feelings, yet people fall apart, because things seem to be this way or that?  Unsubstantiated feelings are just that, feelings; nothing more.

When a person invites Jesus into their heart and becomes a Christian, redemption from sin is not based upon feelings.  It is confirmed by what God’s Word says.  People are transformed into a Godly nature when they put into practice what the Bible invites them to do.  It instructs the reader on how to pass from death unto life through Jesus Christ the Lord.  It is so easy and straightforward, yet some individuals assume it to be most difficult.

(Romans 10:9-10), “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”  v.10 “For with the heart one believes unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

If there is little or no feeling at conversion, this does not negate the inerrant Word of God.  We each have unique personalities, which react differently.  We need not ‘feel’ to make the Bible ‘factual’.  When individuals act upon God’s instructions in (Romans 10:9), the Bible says they are saved.  It doesn’t specify whether feelings occur or not.  It becomes a progression of walking by faith.

Faith is based upon thought.  When we read the Bible and think on its content, this produces faith.  The faith that is produced replaces worry.  “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God,” (Romans ).

Anytime worry captivates the thought process, because of unconstructive feelings, this person needs to remember what (Philippians 4:8-9) can do for them.  When we meditate upon the truths of God’s Word, it brings peace to our mind, because it is Holy Spirit inspired and pure.  It satisfies and gratifies.  As we consume the truths of the Bible, we become stronger in faith, because God’s Word is alive.

Given that maturity in faith is the result of reading and hearing God’s Word, as we exercise the faith that is established in our heart from studying the Bible, God strengthens our endeavors to rise above negative feelings.  We walk in His strength and stature; unashamed to hold our head high as children of God.

(2 Timothy ), “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God; a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

As we think on things that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely and of good report, God’s peace prevails; our faith increases; and our walk with Him becomes sure and steadfast.

When All Else Failed

I remember, years ago, attempting to find satisfaction by doing things and going places that were not conducive to mind, body, and spirit.  The places I frequented did not typify a wholesome, decent, or respectable environment.  The surroundings reeked with cigarette smoke and the stench of booze.  These establishments separated me from my money as they poured another drink; unconcerned for my wellbeing or best interest.

I experimented with sinful things that filled the devil’s toy box, which offered a numbing sense of satisfaction, though never a lasting high.  It was desperate attempts to escape the drudgeries of life.  I needed something real, yet tangible, to help me cope with unhappiness, but I was looking in all the wrong places.

I tried hopelessly to find contentment.  It seemed as if the weariness of life followed me wherever I went.  With every effort I failed miserably in finding satisfaction.  Things just left me wanting more.

My poignant existence reminded me of the song that Mick Jagger sang with The Rolling Stones rock band; released in the United States in 1965.  “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction.”

Relationships happened, but satisfaction was temporary; leaving me unfulfilled and empty.  I was searching for something, not knowing what I was searching for.  It was like the movie, “Groundhog Day.”  I pillowed my head at night only to wake up the next morning to the same events over and over again; nothing new to add to my collection of experiences; just a dull ache for more.

Everything I tried was futile in providing lasting joy.  I felt lonely and disconnected from truth, with disparaging thoughts of, “Is this all there is to life?”  I’m amazed at how many people, like me, are looking for truth; yet remain blind with eyes wide open, though the answer is right in front of them.  I believe the problem is their ‘refusal to see’ that keeps them in darkness.

I knew there was a God somewhere, but I was not willing to separate myself long enough from worldly pleasures to find where He lived.  Day in and day out I continued my journey trudging down the same old disappointing, unsatisfying, and unproductive road that led to destruction.

When all else failed in bringing purpose to my depressed state of mind, out of desperation I turned to Jesus.  To my surprise He was standing in front of me all the time.  I didn’t have to search high and low, nor did He expect me to pretty myself up for Him.

I came as I was with all of my hang-ups and questions, and Jesus received me with open arms.  He was patiently waiting for me to come to my senses and realize that things cannot bring lasting happiness or peace; only God, through Jesus Christ, can do this.

When all else failed, God didn’t.  When all else failed, God’s grace was sufficient to meet my needs.  When all else failed, Jesus gave me life and that more abundantly through the blood He shed on Calvary’s cross; dying for my sins.

I was blind, but now see; lost, but now found; bound, but now free.  I found what I was looking for; Jesus, the Son of the Living God.

God loves you!  He may not approve of things you are doing, but I guarantee He is waiting for you to open your heart’s door to His love.  Do you hear Jesus knocking?

(Revelation3:20), “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.”

Cleaning House

It is amazing to me, with all of my corruptness and uncaring attitude at times, how a perfect and caring God can still love me.  His patience overwhelms my understanding, and I ask myself, “Why does God forgive me over and over again?”  The answer is clear.  God is perfecting me.  He’s cleaning house.

God knows my personality, disposition, and shortcomings better than me, yet He loves so deeply that He is willing to work with me in ridding myself of the old sin nature and seize the new image of Christ.  He’s cleaning house.

Because of Gods longsuffering and potency, He assists in my ongoing efforts to purge myself of things that easily beset me.  This allows a Christ-like nature to develop; taking on the character and moral fiber of the Lord.  I become more like Jesus by cleaning house.

(Matthew 11:28-30), “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”  v.29 “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”  v.30 “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

As God teaches the importance of never giving up, but to keep pressing onward, He builds within each Christian a resilience that enables the flesh to resist old nature habits and sin, and to become the victor over them.  He subsequently gives more of Himself.  This comes through cleaning house.

(James 4:7-8), “Therefore submit to God.  Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”  v.8 “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you…”

God is the potter and I am the clay.  He is molding and making me into something beautiful; a pleasing vessel that God is perfecting through His gentle touch.  The kneading and smoothing away of rough edges assure me that He is cleaning house.

When we come to God just as we are, He makes us perfect in Christ.  In my eyes I am far from perfect, but God sees me through the perfection of the Lord Jesus, because my self righteous imperfections are as filthy rags in His sight.

(Isaiah 64:6), “But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are like filthy rags; we all fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.”

As the Holy Spirit enables me to pick myself up after a fall, one by one the hidden sins and habits are removed.  The nature of Christ begins to shine forth, because God is cleaning house.

God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit abide within those that invite them into their heart.  Our body becomes a dwelling place for the Trinity. The Holy Spirit immediately begins the task of sweeping out the old sin nature and making room for the new nature of Christ.  You guessed it.  He’s cleaning house.

(Revelation 3:20), “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him, and dine with him, and he with Me.”

Born to Win

I remember the days when tattoos were primarily worn by military personnel, gang members, prison inmates and wannabe tough guys.  Two tattoos stand out quite vividly in my mind.  They were thought to be cool, because they reflected negative undertones.  The words say it all…BORN TO LOSE and BORN TO RAISE HELL.

A grandpa now in my sixties, I am thankful that I didn’t mark my body with these words, though I came close at times.  I know they are just tattoos, and God looks on the inside of a person rather than the outside, but I’m glad they are not on my arm as a constant reminder of the troubled years that I endured without Godly direction.

Since I found meaning to life in 1969, because of Jesus Christ, these words no longer have the same draw they once had.  They don’t express the views and lifestyle I now live, because the attitude of my heart changed when I met the Lord.

I have learned in my Christian walk that I was born to win, not lose.  I was born to raise my voice in praise to God, not to raise hell.  God made life worth living.

The world may have a lot to offer in the way of momentary pleasure and financial gain, but these things can never bring a peaceful night’s sleep or calmness when facing tomorrow’s unknowns.  As a Christian I can rest in God and know that He has all things in control.  My steps are ordered of the Lord.  I will not lose to the devil as long as I am walking with Jesus.  I was born to win.

A person may win the biggest lottery prize ever offered in the State of California and still not possess contentment, or enjoy lasting peace that God has blessed me with all of these years.  If an individual does not know Jesus as their Lord and Savior, their search for fulfillment cannot be achieved no matter how much money they have, because money cannot buy happiness.

(Matthew 16:26) “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?  Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?”

The moment I invited Jesus Christ into my heart I was declared a winner by God.  I became His son and joint-heirs with the Lord.  His royal blood now flows through my veins.  I am rich in spirit, because the three most important entities in the universe dwell within me—the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.  I am a winner beyond measure.

I have a mansion in heaven; a God who is alive and not dead like the gods of this world; I belong to His family; and I won’t spend eternity in hell.  Nothing in this world can compare to these wonderful promises.  I am indeed a winner!  I was born to win!

Jesus Christ won the battle for our soul on the cross of Calvary when He gave His life for the sins of humanity and then rose from the grave the third day.  This act of love gives us the wonderful hope that we too can live, through Him.  Praise the Lord; we were born to win!

A Trip to the Woodshed

When I was a lad growing up in the small town of Martinez, California, on occasion my mother would worn me that if I didn’t behave myself she would tell my dad when he got home from work.  You know what that meant; a trip to the woodshed.

I remember only a few unpleasant trips, because I learned quickly that obedience was to my advantage.  Dad wasn’t abusive, but he believed in discipline.  He raised four children with good moral values and upstanding character.  He instilled in each of us respect for the rules at home and God’s commandments.

I thought Dad was unreasonable at times and a little hard on my buttocks, but his goal was to train me in the way of right living.  He knew the importance of correction and administering it in love.  A trip to the woodshed now and then taught me obedience.  Having raised three children of my own, I appreciate Dad’s commitment to the value of obedience.  I too imparted this respect of authority to my children, in love.

(Hebrews 12:11)  “Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”

Our Father in heaven also knows the importance of correction, for without chastisement, the Bible says that we are not His children.  I have come to realize that correction equals love and son-ship.

(Hebrews 12:5-8), “And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons:  My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked of Him:” vs.6 “For whom the Lord loves he chastens, and scourges every son whom he receives.”   vs.7 “If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten?”  vs.8 “But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons.”

I don’t know how many trips you’ve made to the woodshed before you got the message, but God, in His infinite love, continues His correction to form us into obedient children in the image of Christ.  He’s preparing us to spend eternity with Him.

(John 3:16-18), “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” vs.17 “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” vs.18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

If things seem to be going somewhat wrong, perhaps God is trying to get your attention, or the devil is buffeting you.  The answer is to draw closer to God through obedience, prayer and reading the Bible.  You’ll be amazed at what God reveals to you in those quiet times with Him.  He has your best interest at heart and wants to commune with you.

Obedience is better than sacrifice.  Given the choice between sacrificing peace of mind, joy in living and right standing with God, I choose to obey God and save another trip to the woodshed.  It is a better way to live and enjoy life.  Kicking against the authority of God does not accomplish much.  The Lord is determined to make us into the image of His dear son, Jesus, because of the amazing love He has for us.

Illusions of Truth

The fruit of the Spirit is in goodness, righteousness and truth.  Everything good and wholesome is reflective of the fruit of the Spirit spoken of in the New Testament.  These truths are under constant attack from Satan.  (Galatians 5:22-23), “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance:  against such there is no law.”

Some of the unscrupulous goals of the devil are to dilute the Truth of God’s Word with lies and deceptions; to create as many hurtful situations in a person’s life that he can; and to take as many of these unsuspecting souls to hell through trickery and tactful manipulation.

The evil in this world is anti God; disguised as truth.  It’s an illusion of truth that takes on the appearance of light, but it is darkness at its deepest obscurity, reminiscent of the wolf in sheep’s clothing that eludes detection.  Satan meticulously plots his next move and waits for the opportune moment to pounce on another innocent victim.  The evil one possesses the outer beauty to deceive, but inside is death and ruination for anyone that allows him to acquire familiarity in their life.

Things aren’t always as they seem.  The devil can take on the appearance of truth, looking like the real thing, yet given the chance he will ravage the innocence of the unsuspecting.  The devil is sly and cunning.  His craftiness is no match for the happy-go-lucky thrill seeker that is looking for unattainable happiness in things of this world.  Good judgment is to seek the refuge of God’s harbor of calmness where safety and truth abound.

The devil wants to consume all that is good and replace it with confusion and heartache.  He is the anti-spirit of holiness; hating truth.  Lucifer, as he is known, wars against the supremacy of God and the wonderful influences of His attributes.  The devil is hard pressed to deceive as many people as he can before he and his angels are thrown into the lake of fire where they will suffer the ultimate punishment for their revolt in heaven.

Hell was created by God to punish Lucifer and a third of the angels that followed his rebellious attempts to usurp God’s position and power.  They were cast out of heaven until such time that God chooses to banish them to hell.

The devil is at enmity with God and His creation.  In the Garden of Eden the treacheries and illusions of truth were centered upon Adam’s helpmate, Eve.  As Lucifer slithered around the garden in the form of a serpent, familiarity of his presence resulted in Adam and Eve’s fall.

The devil beguiled Eve with lies and deception that caused her to sin against God.  She in turn tempted Adam to sin, thus causing the separation between God and mankind, explained in (Genesis 3: 1-6) of the Old Testament.

The battle between good and evil is ongoing in the day in which we live.  It is a relentless attempt by Satan to rape the natural emotions and affections of anyone walking with God and those that see the need to reach out to Him.  (1 Peter 5:8), “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”

His tactics are scrupulous, but limited.  The devil has only the power that we allow him to have over our lives.  (Philippians 4:13), “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.”

(1 John 4:4), “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”

The devil has no remorse for wrongdoings, and absolutely disregards our wellbeing.  He promotes his deceptions under the guise of self absorbed attitudes of humanistic slothfulness and godless anarchy in people that disregard truth.

Why does mankind allow themselves to be taken in by illusions of truth exhibited by the imperfect spirit of Satan?  Why does humanity have unrighteous desires to sin?  The answer is simple.  The lust for sin began in the Garden of Eden.  Adam and Eve disobeyed God.  It’s the Adam-nature that is present in every living soul; influencing better judgment.  We inherited this sinful nature.  Sinners need a Savior to set at liberty their soul that is held captive by Satan’s illusions of truth.

Jesus Christ is the Savior.  There is no other way to obtain freedom except through His name.  He is our only hope.  His strength allows us to succeed in purity of heart, while walking in truth.

(Psalm 23:1-6), “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”  v.2 “He makes me to lie down in green pastures:  He leads me beside the still waters.”  v.3 “He restores my soul:  He leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”  v.4 “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:  for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”  v.5 “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.”  v.6 “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

God is reality.  He is not the illusion of Truth.  He is Truth!

Everyone Needs a Scout

When I was a youngster in my late teens and early Twenties, I watched a television series called, “Rawhide.”  There were 217 episodes produced from 1959 to 1965.  They were entertaining and fun to watch.

The one actor that stands out most to me is the scout, Rowdy Yates, played by Clint Eastwood.  His task on the show was to scout ahead of the cattle drive looking for potential problems, and then report back to the head ramrod, Gil Favor, played by Eric Fleming.

A heavy responsibility befell scouts that hired themselves out to cattle drives and wagon trains in early western days.  Clint Eastwood portrayed the responsibilities-of-safety for the herd and drovers.  He searched out water and grazing suitable for the cattle, and located the best place to ford rivers and streams.

Scouts put their lives on the line daily with regards to wild animals, Indians and rustlers that always wanted something that didn’t belong to them.  The challenge of the scout was to spot these cattle trail risks before they spotted him in their rifle sights.

Rowdy Yates was good at what he did.  He kept the drive moving safely; on schedule; and with few unpleasant incidents.  His keen sense for spotting danger was necessary to the success of every cattle drive.  He and Gil Favor worked closely together and respected each other’s position.  Gil didn’t take on the responsibility of his scout, because he was certain that Rowdy had the ability and experience to get the job done.  Rowdy knew what he was doing.

Gil believed in his scout and listened to his reports intently.  He then made the necessary decisions to deal with the problems reported.  Gil had much confidence in Rowdy, because he had proven himself over and over again.  Rowdy was a man of integrity, while doing his job with diligence.  He demonstrated himself to be a man of character.

The Holy Spirit is our scout; looking out for our interest.  He never fails to make us aware of pitfalls ahead, and points out the dangers that face us on the straight and narrow path that we’re traveling.

It’s our job to listen as He speaks, because His main objective is to get us to our destination safely.  As we respond to His warnings in a positive and responsible way, we walk safely in a land of temptations and impure surroundings.  We remain in His care…safe.

The Bible tells us in (Psalms 37:23) “The steps of a good man are order by the Lord; and he delights in his way.”  The Holy Spirit, our scout, knows the right path we should take.  All we need do is to follow where He leads and never attempt to be our own scout. Listen to the Holy Spirit and through discernment take the right direction in our lives.

Satan always wants something that doesn’t belong to him.  We are God’s property, through Jesus Christ.  The Holy Spirit keeps it that way as long as we listen to His words of warning, and allow Him the latitude to do his job.  Everyone needs a scout to look out for them and to keep them safe, while they journey the path that leads to heaven.  The Holy Spirit is our safe-keeper that protects us on the path of righteousness.  He’s our scout that we can trust and have confidence in.

Take Time

I’m sitting here with my ballpoint in hand asking God what He has for me today.  This is our time together when He speaks to my heart and I write on paper the thoughts He brings to mind.

Some people choose to take time with God first thing in the morning, at their lunch break, or the last thing at night, just before retiring.  The key to communication with God is to take time with Him.  Whatever time works in your schedule works for Him.

The inner soul gleans strength when prayer is part of an everyday walk with the Lord.  When we take time to listen to the spiritual insight He speaks to our mind, our walk with Him remains strong and steadfast as we apply God’s words to our life.

God is never too busy to listen to our prayers, or to share insight with us.  All we need do is find a quiet place away from the hustle and bustle of life; then listen to what He is saying.  It’s hard to hear God when the television or radio is blasting, because noise drowns out His attempts to commune with us.

Some people feel they have met their spiritual obligation by attending church on Easter and Christmas, or spending time inside a confession booth telling a priest their past sins.  Seldom do they take time in prayer and supplication with the Lord.

Life is too short and complex to not take time with God.  We need all the help we can get, and then some.  God is willing to help us if we take time to ask.  We need quiet time for sanity sake and our spiritual well being.  The constant bombardment of challenges makes life an uphill climb for anyone.  Unless people take time to pause and pray each day, life becomes boring.  God the Father refreshes one’s spirit; making life worth living.

Perhaps you have been thinking about God and how you can improve your relationship with Him.  As I have mentioned, the answer is to take time to communicate.  This is the key that unlocks the door to spiritual maturity.  If it’s just fifteen minutes a day that you take, be faithful in doing so.  The dividends are many; you will be glad you did.  It is not a waste of time, because time spent with God will make the rest of your day go smoother, with less stress.

Responsibilities will still be there, but your attitude and disposition will be enriched.  You’ll be able to cope with everyday pressures more effectively when you take time with God.  He makes the day more enjoyable, pleasant, and alive; not dead and gloomy.  Things aren’t as bad as they seem, because He smoothes out the rough spots ahead of us.

We have a wonderful opportunity to step into the presence of God in our quiet time.  He is waiting for you to take time for Him, because He desires your fellowship.  You will be amazed at what you come away with when you do so.  Now is as good a time as any.  Simply say, “Hello God, I’m here.”  You will be amazed and blessed when you take time to listen.

(Psalm 121:1-3), “I will lift up my eyes to the hills from whence comes my help.”  v.2 “My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”  v.3 “He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber.”
