Windows to the Soul

There seems to be a great deal of debate over the origin of the phrase, “Eyes are the windows to your soul.”  Having noted this, I will incorporate the concept into my thought for today.

People that are filled with the Spirit of God radiate His love and affection.  Their eyes are alive with kindness, because the eyes are windows to the soul, which reveal the freedom they possess; no longer bound by the old sin nature.

God forgave my sins the moment I invited Jesus into my heart in 1969.  Not only was I renewed on the inside, but my countenance was also changed.  The expression on my face was one of peace, with a smile, whereas, I had nothing to smile about prior to my conversion.  My eyes were alive with gladness, because I experienced a born again awakening.  No longer was the grip of sin squeezing life out of me; I now had the joy of the Lord, which generated new life experiences.

The next day my friends saw the change immediately.  They asked me what was wrong.  No longer was I harboring hate and despair, but glowed with gratitude and love for what God had done.  They saw Jesus in my eyes.  I was different, because God made the difference.  He gave me hope where there was none.  I was a new person!  I was a Christian!

My friends could see deeply into my soul as I shared Christ with them.  My eyes were windows that revealed clear insight and understanding of God’s amazing grace.  They knew me before, but now there was something extraordinary that drew them to me.  It was the Lord inside my soul.  They wanted what I had.

One by one I witnessed to my friends regarding God’s amazing love that He expressed through His Son Jesus.  I can remember after one friend invited Jesus into his heart, he exclaimed, “I can look you straight in the eyes, because I have what you have!”

I rejoiced with him as tears coursed down his cheeks.  I saw in his eyes what he saw in mine.  Like windows to the soul, they told the story.  A miraculous change took place when God forgave his sins.  The peace that surrounded him was the same peace our Heavenly Father gives to everyone that desires a new beginning.

The next time you look into the mirror, look deeply into your eyes and take note of what you see.  Is it unrest, calamity and worry, or is the beauty of your soul looking back at you?  Jesus makes the difference.
