The Journey Includes the Destination

Every trip begins with a first step.  For many people, whether traveling for business or vacation, the destination is foremost in their minds rather than the time it takes to get there.

In contrast, Ralph Waldo Emerson famously wrote, “Life is a journey, not a destination.”  His words remind us that the experiences, growth, and lessons we encounter along the way are often more valuable than simply reaching a particular goal.  This thought complements the familiar idiom, “Stop and smell the roses,” which encourages us to slow down, appreciate life’s blessings, and enjoy the beauty around us.

There is much wisdom in both sayings, and they are worth putting into practice.  Yet, from a Christian perspective, they do not tell the whole story.  While the journey of faith is indeed precious, it is also leading us toward a glorious destination.  For the believer, the Christian life is not only about walking with Christ each day—it is also about the sure hope of heaven.

Jesus Himself promised this eternal home to every child of God.  It is a place not made with human hands, prepared by God for those who belong to Him.  There, every tear will be wiped away.  Death will no longer separate us from those we love.  Temptation and sin will be gone forever.  And when we see the Lord, Scripture tells us that we shall be like Him.  While I cannot fully comprehend all that this means, I know it will be more wonderful than words can express.

The journey with Jesus is beautiful, but the destination makes the journey complete.  I know that one day I will spend eternity in heaven with Jesus Christ—the One who made that promise possible by dying on the cross for my sins and rising again.  Because of Him, I have the confident hope of an eternal home, where faith will become sight and joy will never end.
