When was the last time you turned off the radio, television, and iPhone? Much like the body, I believe our minds need a rest—not just a night’s sleep, but an opportunity to unwind and simply rest from the challenges of life.
Internet surfing can be
exhausting at times. Yet we can become
so caught up in its clutches that, before we know it, time has simply slipped
away. We may wonder why our eyes are
tired, strained, and a bit out of focus as we think to ourselves, “Did that
time really quiet my mind, or am I more tired than when I started?”
I’ve heard that even a
twenty-minute nap can refresh the mind.
I’m not suggesting that we lay our heads on our desks at work and take a
quick snooze—that would probably be unwise!
But taking a “me” timeout can be important for our mental and physical
well-being. Sometimes, we simply need to
step away from the noise and give our minds permission to rest.
I know a lady who is a very
good friend of my wife who journals every day.
For her, that timeout refreshes her psyche because it allows her to put
down on paper some of the pressures and pressing issues of the week. She can relax, rest her mind, and write.
Perhaps that is why writing
down my thoughts to post on my blog gives me not only a feeling of purpose, but
also a sense of well-being when I finish a piece. I hope my words will strengthen and uplift
those who read them. After all, this is
the beat and desire of my heart.
If my words can quiet the
minds of those who read my thoughts, I feel blessed that I can play a small
part in encouraging them to rest, face their challenges, and examine the inward
condition of their souls. Perhaps, in
doing so, their eyes and minds will be drawn to the true Comforter—the Holy
Spirit.
He has a way of leveling out
the playing field of our busy minds.
When confusion or frustration begins to surface, He speaks peace into
the places where our thoughts seem to be racing in every direction.
Jesus does this for me every
day now that I walk with Him. And
perhaps that is what we all need from time to time—not more noise, more
information, or more activity, but simply a quiet place where we can rest our
minds and hear the gentle voice of God.
“Casting all your care upon
Him; for He cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7
