Too often, people fail to give away from themselves in a way that blesses others. They are reserved in their giving and expressions of love, because they expect too much from people. They love conditionally and have high expectations of others, which govern the measure of recognition they give. Worthiness is the factor that drives the level of love and affection to the desired height. Without meeting this standard, little affection is given.
People like this set themselves as the standard for which they feel others should strive to attain, if love is to be shown. This arrogant type of personality favors being the judge, jury and executioner. What’s wrong with this picture? How can any individual think they are perfect and worthy to judge others? Who do they think they are, Jesus?
They need only to look into a mirror and find imperfection staring back at them. No-one is perfect, yet some feel they have achieved it. There is only one individual, whereby perfection ruled his whole life while on earth. The attributes of God shrouded him like a cloak, while the angels in heaven revered him. He was God in flesh—named Jesus. He loved without dissimulation; with unconditional love. He showed this love when He died on a cross for our sins. “He loved us before we first loved Him” (James 2:2).
We can all take lessons on forgiveness and how to love our neighbors as our self. When we begin with ‘us’, before expecting perfection in others, God’s Spirit teaches how to walk, talk and think differently. We need to remove the beam from our own eye to see clearly how to remove the mote from another person’s eye. (St Matthew 7:3-5)
In short, each of us should seek God for patience and love; to be able to give and receive love. How can anyone love others if they cannot love themselves first? Sin prevents this from happening. God makes this possible through His son Jesus.
When sin is eliminated from a person’s life, they become more compassionate, patient and loving. They no longer are the way they once were, because love entered them through the Holy Spirit.
If we catch ourselves loving with conditions, we need to remember from where God brought us and how Jesus had mercy on our sin sick soul. Because of God’s love we can now love unconditionally.
