In Times Like These

In times like these we need stability and hope.  With all the unrest around us and throughout the world, the uncertainties that face people are quite alarming.  Without some semblance of order these looming pressures can be overwhelming—if not crushing.

Anyone that leans on their own intellectual ability, popularity and the where-with-all to achieve financial gain, will soon experience a gnawing emptiness working its way inward to the innermost part of their being, thus, affecting not only the psyche of that individual, but all areas of living in negative ways.  These baseless efforts to find contentment are only counterfeits for God’s abundant living.  Attempts to secure a support system that works long-term, rather than an occasional high, are futile when leaning to one’s own understanding in finding the true meaning of living.

Money cannot buy happiness, nor can friends provide a sense of belonging.  A person can even achieve more than one college degree behind their name, yet experience a lack of fulfillment.  Something is always missing if they don’t know Jesus as Lord.

In times like these we need a Savior to be our confidant and friend.  Jesus alone can give life new meaning and fill the void-ness that possessions fail to do.

(Psalm 46:1-3), “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”  v.2 “Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;” v.3 “Though its waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with its swelling.”

The hopeless feeling that closes in around us from time to time will be dispelled when we call out to God for deliverance.  He brings a sense of calmness and serenity to a person’s soul in a world that is topsy-turvy.  The Lord is our hope and salvation.

When the Lord speaks peace to our wavering state of mind, the one word that resounds above all others is the word ‘rest’.  We can rest in the knowledge that God is going before us, while speaking words to console our heart—“Peace be still!”

Allowing God to be our strength rather than depending upon things of our own making or accumulation to bring order to calamity and kayos enables us to walk with confidence, not in ourselves, but God.  Living within the privileges of our faith in Jesus Christ permits us to embrace (Proverbs ).  “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”

When Satan’s roar makes us tremble in fear, and we find ourselves listening to his intimidating words of daunting threats that cause a foreboding dread to face tomorrow’s challenges, God intervenes on our behalf.  He silences our adversary with one fall swoop of His mighty sword—the Holy Scriptures; God’s Word.  The devil must submit to the awesome power of God’s might through the spoken Word.  For this reason we must hide God’s Word in our heart to combat the enemy of our soul when he tries to pull us down to his gutter level of iniquity and shame.

(Psalm 119:9-16), “How can a young man cleanse his way?  By taking heed according to Your word.”  v.10 “With my whole heart I have sought You; oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!”  v.11 “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.”  v.12 “Blessed are You, O Lord!  Teach me Your statutes.”  v.13 “With my lips I have declared all the judgments of Your mouth.”  v.14 “I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, as much as in all riches.”  v.15 “I will meditate on Your precepts, and contemplate Your ways.”  v.16 “I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word.”

In times like these it is imperative to remain in God’s embrace as children of the Most High.  “In Him we live and move and have our being…,” (Acts17:28).
