What Do I Really See

A mirror reveals many things…color and shape of eyes; hair styles; skin tones and texture; and yes, the uniqueness of noses and their national characteristics, unless cosmetic surgery was done.  As I grow older it seems as if I see my dad looking back at me in the reflection of myself…receding hair line; graying temples; jowls and double chin.

Actually, mirrors tell all, if we take time to look closely at the messages they are showing us.  Mirrors cannot put on a fake front or false image for anyone.  They reveal exactly what is on this side of the glass.

Last evening I was looking into the mirror and thought to myself, “What do I really see?”  I didn’t resist looking as I once did as a non-Christian, but stared deeply into my eyes; past the graying hair and Scottish shaped nose.  And I was pleased with what I saw.  A happy man was looking back, with peace in his face.  The closer I peered, I sensed his spirit saying, “All is well with God.”  I believe eyes are windows to the soul, which reveal the inner beauty or ugliness that’s there.  I saw beauty.

This night was not like past experiences I had when looking into mirrors.  I use to fear that I would see my inner soul, because sin is revealed through the eyes, so I only glanced as long as was necessary to comb my hair or brush my teeth.  The reflection I saw, as a sinner, exposed who and what I was.  There was no peace in my face, only heartache and questions about tomorrow.  I knew hell was my destination, because of the rebellious lifestyle I was living.  Misery was always looking at me from mirrors.  This was the stigma of sin, and rather than dealing with it I hid from it.

Reading the Bible is like looking into a mirror.  It reveals the true texture and shape of the soul.  If you want to know where you stand with God, the Bible will show you.  Its reflection enables us to see ourselves as God sees us.  We see our true character without fanfare or compromise.

Like mirrors, the Bible never lies.  We either see beauty through Jesus Christ or ugliness, because of sin.  The Bible does not reveal a fake reflection of anyone.  It is the true image that is shown; truth non-obscured.

There is no way to look at a non-Christian and see them as you would a drinking glass half full; either they are born-again-Believers or they are not.  There are no in-between, halfway Christians, with respect to salvation.  The Bible exposes all.

As we read the Gospels we see improvements that are needed in our spiritual walk.  We are faced with what to do next.  If life everlasting is the desire of our heart, God will hear our prayer of repentance and forgive our sins.  If we choose to continue down the same road of rebellion, that choice is ours to make.  But remember, we reap what we sow.

(Galatians 6:7, 8) “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.”  vs. 8 “For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.”

I am glad for the mirror of God’s Holy Word that helped me to see myself as God saw me; lost and ugly, because of sin.  I am thankful for the choice He gave me.  My life took on new dimensions of serenity and happiness when I chose Jesus.  I don’t regret a mile I’ve traveled with God.  Each day gets sweeter and sweeter the older I become.

What do I really see?  I see a sinner saved by grace!  And that sinner was me!  I thank God for showing me who and what I truly was through the reflection in His Word.  The truth has set me free.
