Misery Breeds Contempt

I’m sitting here thinking about the misery I once had, because of sin in my life.  Looking around me each day and listening to the news on television, I see nothing but heartache.  I am constantly reminded of this when I look at co-workers, friends, loved ones and the powerful people on Capital Hill in our government.  Even those less fortunate that live and sleep under freeway overpasses are suffering the same emptiness.

No matter what our status may be, it seems there is one, common element missing.  The lack of it causes an increased number of homicides, break-ins, marital problems, nervous breakdowns and suicides.  There is a need for calmness, yet unrest is spreading rapidly.  Universal disorder is becoming widespread around the globe like never before.  It seems everyone is on edge and feeling contempt for one another, because of the misery that’s within them.

Many seek varying venues trying to find the missing piece that brings them needed answers.  They even seek out sorcerers with supposed powers to see the future; palm readers with their tarot cards; horror scopes in the daily newspapers; and weegie boards, to name a few, in efforts to find the thing that’s missing deep inside.  It’s all useless, ineffective and vain.  The one thing that’s needed is impossible to achieve within our own ability or the manifestations of mischievous spirits.

What is the missing building block that makes up the firm foundation upon which all good things are supported?  Is it fame or fortune? No.  Perhaps it’s power and status.  I think not.

How many people do you suppose have reached the apex of success; finding themselves in the in-crowd; feeling their achievements are all they thought they would be?  Not too many.  I believe countless numbers have gained position, power and fame, yet find it nothing more than pure arrogance, egotism and vanity with frustration mixed into the unsatisfying broth.  They achieved material things without attaining the one thing they truly needed and wanted most, which was missing in their life.  God says that it’s impossible to find if they are seeking it within their own strength and power.

I believe that ‘happiness’ is the missing element that people would give just about anything to possess.  Everyone wants to be happy from the youngest child to the oldest adult.  Happiness brings satisfaction to living.

But there is something that supersedes even happiness.  Without it, life becomes a hopeless venture of wasted energy.  People that have everything this world can offer, and even the pauper with nothing, realize what is missing at the end of the day when they pillow their head.  It is ‘peace’.

They know they don’t have peace, just as I knew.  Everything I tried was in vain.  Few find it, because they are not willing to submit themselves to God’s rules and regulations; allowing Him to have a say in their life and full control over it.  Most are set in their ways and refuse to surrender their will to His.

To find peace we must be agreeable to listen when told how to receive it; be ready to accept change; turn from the present behaviors and conduct; and then give it a try.  When we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior, untainted joy springs up from within, because God’s blessings now flow in our life.

When looking at unsuccessful track records of those that have tried to find happiness, but couldn't, it is soon realized that everything they have succeeded in doing fails to close the gap on happiness.  It’s a thirst that is unquenchable when using one’s own ways and means to subdue it.

If you are reading this and have failed in your attempts to find utopia, allow me to present the Prince of Peace to you.  His name is Jesus.  He is the only way to achieve victory.  All else will fail.  Without peace, life becomes mundane and boring, while stability eludes a person’s grasp.

The Bible says that God will give peace that passes all understanding.  How can a person face tragedy, yet experience peace?  How can they lose a job and remain peaceful?  Peace never fails, because God supplies the need.  He makes a way where there seems to be no way.  Read (Psalms 77) in the Old Testament of the Bible.  It will encourage you.

You will find if life throws you lemons, peace will be the under girding strength that sees you through the hard times, while God remains your co-pilot.  He leads you into a new found confidence with answers and understanding, while you experience harmony and calmness in the process.  Happiness will come; be patient.  God has never failed His children.

Invite the Lord into your heart.  Jesus is the answer you’ve been looking for.  He is the Prince of Peace.
